Hyderabad police arrest father for killing son, dumping body in river

HYDERABAD: The Bandlaguda police in Chandrayangutta division have arrested a man for killing his three-year-old son after initially claiming the child was missing. On September 13, 2025, around 10.30 IST, Sana Begum of Noori Nagar, Bandlaguda, lodged a complaint stating that her younger son, Mohammed Anas, had gone missing in the early hours. The authorities registered a case of kidnapping, and the police began the investigation.
Father confessed to smothering child
During inquiry, police grew suspicious of the boy’s father. On sustained questioning, the man, identified as Mohammed Akbar, 37, a vegetable vendor, admitted to killing his son. He told police that due to frequent family disputes, he smothered the child with a pillow in the early hours of September 13.
He then placed the body in a gunny bag, tied it with rope, transported it on his vehicle and dumped it into the Musi River from Nayapul bridge in an attempt to destroy evidence.
Case altered to murder
Police said that technical evidence, including CCTV footage, corroborated the confession. The Disaster Response Force (DRF) and HYDRAA teams are conducting a search operation to retrieve the body from the river. Authorities altered the case from kidnapping to murder and destruction of evidence under the relevant provisions of law.
Accused has previous criminal record
Police arrested Akbar, a resident of Jahangirabad, Bandlaguda, on September 16 and produced him before court for judicial custody. Police said he had earlier been involved in a murder case registered at Narasingi police station, where the assailant killed the victim after the victim resisted his sexual advances.
South East Zone deputy commissioner of police S Chaitanya Kumar and assistant commissioner of police A Sudhakar supervised the investigation. The DCP appreciated inspector R Devender, detective inspector B Srinivasa Rao, sub-inspector B Subhash, and the Bandlaguda team for swiftly cracking the case.
