HYDERABAD: A case of mass animal abandonment has surfaced in Baghlingampally, where about 40 indie dogs were allegedly left without shelter after their caretaker, 64 year old retired banker Sanjeev Reddy, passed away on October 19.

Residents said Reddy had been providing food, medical care and shelter to the dogs for over five years. Following his death, his wife, daughter and son-in-law, who now occupy the house near a local park, reportedly refused to allow the animals back inside the premises.

Animal welfare workers who visited the site said repeated appeals to the family went unanswered. Pampana Meenakshi, a rescuer from Nagole, said, “I have been visiting this place for over two weeks, requesting the family to continue caring for the dogs, but they are unwilling.”

Volunteers bear costs to shelter sick dogs

Padmini, an author and animal welfare volunteer, said she had personally arranged to move several dogs to private shelters. “There are small puppies and sick dogs exposed to cold nights. These animals were part of Sanjeev Reddy’s legacy

the family should respect his compassion,” she added.

GHMC seeks family’s request to intervene

Officials from the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) veterinary wing said the civic body can act only if the family seeks assistance. “If approached, we will relocate the dogs to shelters and ensure their care,” officials said.

Chikkadpally police station’s Station House Officer Raju Naik said there had been no law and order complaints so far but assured intervention if required.

In the meantime, animal lovers have set up temporary kennels nearby for the dogs, including 15 vaccinated pups that had undergone Animal Birth Control procedures.
