Fake number plate racket busted in Hyderabad; stolen bike traced

HYDERABAD: The Hyderabad City Traffic Police have detected a case involving the use of a fake number plate, leading to the recovery of a stolen motorcycle linked to a 2023 theft case.
The case came to light after a complaint by D. Satyanarayana, a resident of Chinthal in Ranga Reddy district. He reported the illegal use of his vehicle registration number AP28CJ8911, assigned to a Passion Pro motorcycle.
During the enquiry, police identified Lal Mohammed, 48, a resident of Mallepally, as the user of the fake number plate. Further verification revealed that the motorcycle in his possession was originally registered as AP29AM8979.
Stolen vehicle traced to earlier FIR registered in 2023
Police said the actual owner of the vehicle is Eshwar Prasad Chourasia, a resident of Ramanthapur. Based on his complaint, an FIR (Crime No. 473/2023) was registered on December 4, 2023, at Musheerabad police station under Section 379 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
During inspection, Lal Mohammed told police that he had purchased the motorcycle in 2024 from an unknown person through an online platform.
The recovered vehicle has been handed over to Musheerabad police station for further investigation.
Police warn public against buying vehicles without verification
The Hyderabad Traffic Police cautioned that using fake or tampered number plates is a punishable offence under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Motor Vehicles Act.
Officials said advanced systems such as CCTV surveillance and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras are being used to detect such violations and track vehicle movement.
Police advised citizens to verify registration certificates, ownership identity, and engine and chassis numbers before purchasing vehicles.
They also urged the public to report suspected misuse of vehicle registration numbers through the e-challan portal, email, or WhatsApp helpline.
D. Joel Davis, IPS, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Hyderabad City, issued the advisory.
