Fake number plate case busted in Hyderabad; man arrested

HYDERABAD: The Hyderabad Traffic Police, in coordination with Chaderghat police station, arrested a man for allegedly using a fake number plate on his two-wheeler by tampering with the original registration number.
Police identified the accused as Mohd. Rafiuddin, a resident of Kurmaguda, Madannapet. He was apprehended on April 16, 2026.
During inspection, officials found that the accused had altered his vehicle’s registration number from TG11A1698 to TG11A1898. Police said he did so to mislead enforcement authorities and avoid detection.
The case came to light after a complaint by Shaheen Begum, a resident of Padma Nagar, Old Malakpet. She is the registered owner of vehicle number TG11A1898. She alleged misuse of her vehicle’s registration number after multiple traffic challans were generated against her vehicle due to the fake plate used by the accused.
Case registered under BNS and Motor Vehicles Act provisions
Based on the complaint, Chaderghat police station registered a case (FIR No. 136/2026) under Sections 319(2) and 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and Section 158 read with 177 of the Motor Vehicles Act.
Police issued a notice under Section 35(3) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), corresponding to Section 41 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC). Further investigation is underway.
Officials said the case was detected through coordinated efforts of the Hyderabad Traffic Police and Chaderghat police.
Police warn of strict action against number plate tampering
The Hyderabad Traffic Police warned that using fake or tampered number plates is a serious and punishable offence under the BNS and the Motor Vehicles Act.
They said advanced systems such as CCTV surveillance and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras are being used to detect such violations and track vehicle movements.
Citizens have been advised to report suspected misuse of registration numbers through the e-challan portal, email, or the traffic WhatsApp helpline.
