HYDERABAD: SR Nagar police arrested a man for allegedly posing as a Food Safety Officer and extorting money from hotel managements by threatening regulatory action.

Police identified the accused as Srinivas, 46, a resident of Erragadda’s Shastri Nagar. He allegedly visited a hotel in SR Nagar and claimed to be a Food Safety Officer. He told the management that the hotel had hygiene violations and warned that a case would be registered and notices issued.

Hotel staff grow suspicious after repeated demand

According to police, Srinivas allegedly offered to “settle” the matter for ₹10,000. He reportedly collected ₹5,000 in cash from hotel manager Syed Ali Asher Jafri and left.

A few days later, he returned to the same hotel and allegedly demanded more money. Hotel staff became suspicious and told him that if there were genuine violations, he should issue official notices. They refused to pay any money, following which he left the premises.

Security guard booked after police inquiry

The hotel manager later lodged a complaint with police. During the inquiry, SR Nagar police found that Srinivas had allegedly been impersonating a Food Safety Officer and threatening hotel owners to extort money.

Police arrested him and registered a case. Investigators said the accused was working as a security guard in Erragadda.
