Hyderabad faces growing mosquito menace; Citizens demand action from GHMC

Hyderabad: Residents across Hyderabad are increasingly concerned about the rising mosquito infestation and are urging the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) to take immediate action. Many attribute the growing mosquito problem to overflowing drains, unattended lakes filled with hyacinths, and other environmental factors.
Speaking with Hyderabad Mail, Sai Teja, a resident of Nizampet, expressed frustration, saying, “Hyderabad has become like a mosquito breeding ground. There is no fogging and no proper anti-larvae operations. If GHMC claims to be addressing the issue, it’s not being done properly. I’ve heard that even those carrying out mosquito fogging are facing side effects. Strict measures are needed to combat diseases like malaria, dengue, and typhoid.”
@GHMCOnline ticket raised long back for Mosquito fogging. Spoke to supervisor, he said ok Sir will send till date nobody turned up. Can we have somebody to Kondapur KMR Estates. @Bhatti_Mallu @CommissionrGHMC @NeelimaEaty

Ajith Nair, another resident from Kondapur, shared his experience, “I raised a ticket with GHMC for mosquito fogging in Kondapur’s KMR Estates, but despite following up with the supervisor, no action has been taken so far.”
The mosquito problem is not limited to a single area. Residents from various neighborhoods, including those around Mir Alam Tank, Kondapur, Nallagandla Lake, Hafeezpet, Miyapur, and the Chaderghat area, have voiced similar complaints. They report an increasing number of mosquitoes, especially near construction sites. Many residents feel that GHMC is not doing enough to address the issue, with some citing a lack of response despite numerous complaints through social media platforms.
The situation is same in almost all parts of hyd and secunderabad…none has solution ….no one bothered to look into this issue….we are living on business as usual mode…

“Global city Hyderabad should not become a mosquito colony,” said Satya, a concerned citizen, while Srinivasulu Reddy added, “The situation is seriously affecting our health and sleep quality.”

Others, like Ravi Teja from Nallagandla Lake, noted that their complaints to GHMC through social media have gone unaddressed. “I raised the issue on X or Twitter, but it seems like no action has been taken,” he said.
In areas like Kondapur’s KMR Estates Road, residents are particularly troubled by the state of a local GHMC park, which is frequently filled with filth and stagnant water, providing a perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes.
Ajay Reddy, a resident of Alkapur, used technology to highlight the extent of the infestation. Meanwhile, Rameez Mohammed of Pioneer Estate is planning to leave the area for ten days due to the severity of the mosquito problem.
The situation is especially concerning in Ibrahim Bagh and the Neknampur Lake area in Manikonda, where residents say that despite claims of anti-larvicide efforts, the mosquito population has only worsened. Swarms of mosquitoes have made it nearly impossible for residents to go outside after 6 p.m., leading to increased health risks.
Residents are calling for immediate intervention to address the growing public health threat posed by mosquito-borne diseases.
How to Report Mosquito Infestation Issues to GHMC:
Citizens can report mosquito-related problems through the “My GHMC” App by searching for the Entomology department or by calling GHMC’s helpline at 040-23225397.
Tips to Prevent Mosquito Breeding:
1. Eliminate Standing Water: Empty containers, buckets, or trays that collect water regularly.
2. Clean Gutters: Ensure gutters are clear of debris to prevent water accumulation.
3. Cover Water Storage: Make sure containers holding water are tightly sealed.
4. Use Mosquito Nets: Place nets around open windows and doors to keep mosquitoes out.
5. Maintain Your Lawn: Keep grass trimmed to reduce mosquito hiding spots.
6. Dispose of Waste Properly: Keep trash off the ground to prevent water collection in discarded items.
Following these simple steps, residents can help reduce mosquito breeding and maintain a cleaner, safer environment.
