Hyderabad engineers develop device to turn fog into water
HYDERABAD: Three young engineers from the city are working on a project to extract drinking water from fog and help reduce water shortages in rural areas.
D. Ritwik, Mohammed Ejaz and Homsanika Reddy were selected as semi-finalists in Samsung’s nationwide Solve for Tomorrow competition for their project on water conservation.
The three, who studied computer science engineering at a private engineering college in Medchal, learnt about the competition and submitted details of their project online.
Twenty-six teams from 15 states competed in the contest. Their project, titled “Mystify”, was selected for the semi-finals. Samsung provided the team ₹8 lakh to develop their idea and gave each of the three engineers a laptop.
Engineers work on solar-powered fog water device
Using the ₹8 lakh grant, the engineers are developing an innovative device focused on water conservation.
The engineers said they had built a device during their college days that could extract water directly from fog. They said they had earlier heard about devices that extract water from air and wondered why water could not be produced from fog.
The three began working on the idea together in college and spent a year developing a device called “Hydrift”.
Device aims to collect droplets directly from fog
The solar-powered device is designed to extract water directly from fog, the engineers said. They said the device can be installed in areas that receive fog and can attract water droplets from it.
