Hyderabad engineer arrested for chain snatching in Sanathnagar

HYDERABAD: A 23 year old engineering graduate was arrested for chain snatching in Sanathnagar within half an hour of committing her first offence, police said on Sunday.
The woman told investigators she resorted to theft to help her family manage mounting financial stress.
Debt burden led to crime
The accused was identified as Anitha Reddy, a native of Warangal. She completed her BTech there and later worked in the automobile sector in Chennai. She quit her job two years ago after marrying Rajesh, an employee of a private finance company from Medchal.
The couple lives in Borabanda with their one year old daughter. Police said Rajesh had accumulated debts of about ₹7 lakh.
Snatching in lift, quick arrest
On January 12 around noon, 60 year old Nalla Kamala of Miyapur went to her three storeyed building in Avanthi Nagar Thota to collect rents. As she entered the lift, the accused followed her and attempted to snatch her mangalasutram.
“When I raised an alarm, she managed to grab about half a tola of the gold chain and fled,” Kamala told police.
Residents alerted the police, who launched a search of nearby streets and buildings. “She was caught hiding in the parking lot of a nearby apartment within 30 minutes,” Sanathnagar police station inspector K Srinivasulu said.
Police registered a case under Section 304 (snatching) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, recovered the stolen gold, served a notice as per procedure and released the accused on station bail.
