Telangana govt plans underpass beneath Begumpet runway to ease traffic

HYDERABAD: The Telangana government plans to construct an underpass beneath the runway at Begumpet airport to address long-standing traffic congestion in the Cantonment area, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy said.
He stated that such an underpass beneath an airport runway does not exist elsewhere in the country and that the proposal has moved forward after securing approvals from the Centre following discussions post the Congress assuming office.
Runway underpass proposed to cut congestion bottlenecks
“Our government is bringing a permanent solution to traffic issues near Cantonment. With elevated corridors planned after securing defence land approvals, Hyderabad is set for major traffic relief,” Revanth Reddy said.
The Chief Minister added that the state government is also planning elevated corridors in the area, subject to defence land clearances, as part of a broader strategy to ease traffic flow in key parts of the city.
Project part of wider urban mobility expansion plan
The proposed infrastructure push aims to address congestion around Secunderabad Cantonment, a critical transit zone that has seen persistent traffic bottlenecks.
Officials indicated that the combination of an underpass and elevated corridors is expected to streamline vehicular movement and reduce travel time for commuters in north and central Hyderabad.
