Hyderabad police briefing on arrest of chain snatchers posing as delivery boys

HYDERABAD: Two inter-state chain snatchers, posing as delivery boys, were arrested by the police after a series of thefts across the city during Sankranti festivities.

The accused, natives of Delhi, entered Hyderabad on the morning following Kanuma and carried out multiple chain snatchings while moving around on a stolen Pulsar motorcycle. Their actions triggered panic among residents in areas under the Malkajgiri Commissionerate limits.

Police recovered gold chains weighing 55 grams from the accused. Investigators said the duo had committed 43 thefts over the past nine years.

Masked during offences

According to the police, the accused stole the Pulsar motorcycle from Gopalapuram in the Sainikpuri area and later targeted women in several localities. Wearing masks, they snatched a mangalsutra from a woman in Kuntloor under the Hayathnagar limits.

They then moved to Nagole, where they allegedly snatched a 2.5-tola gold chain from a visually impaired woman, and later to Kothapet, where they broke a 3-tola gold chain from another woman before fleeing.

An attempt to snatch a gold chain from another woman in New Maruti Nagar failed after she resisted, police said.

Cash-only trail

Police said the accused avoided using mobile phones and digital payments to evade tracking. They reportedly made all purchases using ₹10 notes.

LB Nagar Deputy Commissioner of Police Anuradha disclosed the details at a media briefing held at the DCP office on Tuesday.
