HYDERABAD:  Defence manufacturing in Hyderabad is expanding rapidly, with several local companies receiving large orders for missiles, drones, and navigation systems. The sector, which earlier relied heavily on imports from Israel, France, Russia, and the United States, is now witnessing increased domestic production following new central government policies and incentives.

Orders flow to local players

Major defence public sector units, including the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), Mishra Dhatu Nigam (MIDHANI) and the Ordnance Factory, have established a strong presence in and around Hyderabad. Their ecosystem has spurred several private-sector companies to set up operations in the city.

Among them, Zen Technologies received an order worth ₹289 crore from the Ministry of Defence for training and anti-drone systems. Astra Microwave Products secured orders worth ₹285.56 crore from the Indian Air Force to supply communication system components for special forces within 11 months. Apollo Micro Systems and other medium-scale firms have also bagged smaller contracts.

Growing ecosystem creates jobs

Market sources said Avantel Systems has received several small and mid-sized orders and is waiting for larger contracts. Even unlisted small and medium defence firms are winning notable orders, creating new job opportunities in the region. Industry experts said Hyderabad’s defence corridor is set to expand further as local capabilities mature in high-tech segments such as drone modernisation, simulation, and avionics.
