Hyderabad City Police issue cyber fraud advisory and 1930 helpline warning

HYDERABAD: The Hyderabad Cyber Crime Unit has busted a large network that used deepfake videos and Indian Premier League (IPL) content to lure users into illegal betting and fake investment schemes. Fraudsters exploited the IPL’s popularity with match predictions and “sure-win” tips on social media. They also created deepfake videos that falsely showed celebrities endorsing betting platforms and apps. As a result, many users were drawn in by the promise of quick profits.

Fake Profiles and Ads Target Users
Meanwhile, officials identified 184 social media profiles on Facebook and Instagram promoting such content. These accounts ran 801 paid advertisements offering high returns, bonuses and referral commissions. Consequently, the ads targeted vulnerable users, especially youngsters and first-time investors. This increased the risk of financial loss and data theft.

Police Crackdown and Ongoing Probe
Acting swiftly, police took down all identified profiles to stop the spread of misleading content. They also registered six FIRs against those involved. In addition, cyber patrol operations helped authorities identify and remove 427 profiles and 1,903 advertisements linked to such scams. At the same time, investigators are tracking the people behind the network and following the money trail. Officials have warned that strict legal action will follow.

Public Advisory Issued
Therefore, the Cyber Crime Police urged citizens to stay alert. They advised people not to trust ads promising guaranteed profits. They also warned users to avoid unknown betting or investment links. Furthermore, they cautioned that celebrity endorsement videos may be deepfakes. Officials stressed that online betting is illegal in Telangana. Finally, they asked citizens to report suspicious activity via helpline 1930 or the official portal, adding that awareness remains the strongest defence.
