Cyberabad police brief on Hyderabad senior citizen digital arrest scam

HYDERABAD: With Christmas and New Year approaching, Cyber Crime Police, Hyderabad have cautioned citizens to remain vigilant against online scams that typically rise during the festive period.

Fraudsters exploiting festive offers, say police

According to the advisory, cybercriminals often push fraudulent links and unknown APK files through WhatsApp, SMS and email. Scams involving lotteries, gifts, cashbacks and lucky draws also increase during the season.

Fake passes for New Year parties and bogus travel, hotel and resort bookings are among the common traps. Police said fraudsters also float fake cab and rental services, charity appeals, job offers, part-time work schemes, and false refund or bonus messages.

Citizens advised not to share sensitive banking information

The advisory urged people not to click suspicious links or download unknown apps. It asked citizens never to share OTP, PIN, CVV or bank details with anyone. Bookings and offers should be verified only on official platforms.

People were also told to avoid scanning unknown QR codes or responding to UPI requests. Police recommended enabling two-factor authentication and keeping apps updated.

Immediate reporting can help freeze transactions

Those who fall victim to cyber fraud should report the incident without delay at www.cybercrime.gov.in or call 1930. Victims should preserve screenshots, transaction details and contact numbers to aid investigation.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Cyber Crimes), V Aravind Babu, IPS, issued the advisory and urged the public to follow official updates from Cyber Crime Police, Hyderabad.
