Hyderabad cyber crime police remove 184 fake profiles

HYDERABAD: The Cyber Crime unit of the Hyderabad City Police has acted against illegal online betting, gaming promotions and fake investment schemes, removing 184 social media profiles.
In April, the unit identified 184 profiles on Facebook and Instagram through digital surveillance and intelligence-based tracking. These profiles ran 801 paid advertisements targeting Indian users, promoting online gaming, betting applications and fraudulent investment websites.
Ads promise easy money, misuse deepfake videos
The advertisements claimed easy earnings, bonuses, referral commissions and high investment returns to attract users. The identified profiles circulated promotional content, referral links, IPL predictions and ‘deepfake’ videos of public figures to lure users into illegal betting and fraudulent schemes.
As a preventive measure, all 184 profiles were reported to the platforms and removed to curb the spread of illegal content. Based on violations, six FIRs were registered against the operators in April.
427 profiles, 1,903 ads removed so far
As part of continuous cyber patrolling, the unit has so far identified and removed 427 social media profiles and 1,903 paid promotional advertisements. Further inquiry is under way to identify individuals and financial channels linked to these profiles. Action will be taken under relevant laws.
