HYDERABAD: Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police have apprehended Tarun Sachdeva, a resident of Rajasthan in an elaborate insurance fraud scheme. Sachdeva, along with his accomplices, operated and provided current bank accounts to cyber fraudsters to deceive innocent people.

The complaint was lodged by Smt. Shabnam Bakshi, a 72-year-old retired employee from Hyderabad. Cyber fraudsters contacted Bakshi, posing as representatives from Punjab National Bank MetLife Insurance Company and Bharti AXA General Insurance Company. They convinced her to invest Rs. 45.78 lakh under the pretext of insurance schemes. Following her complaint, a case was registered under sections 419, 420 IPC and Sec 66 (C) (D) IT Act 2008.

Focus on professional employees

The fraudsters downloaded data of insurance policyholders, focusing on professionals like doctors, software engineers, and retired government officials. This data was given to tele-callers at their call center, HW Outsourcing & Marketing Pvt Ltd., Delhi. The tele-callers contacted the potential victims, collected personal information, and passed it on to their managers. The managers then convinced the victims to deposit money into fake bank accounts for various fraudulent reasons such as top-up and pre-matured settlements of insurance policies, government charges, and other fees.

Tarun Sachdeva, aged 51, from Jaipur, was a key player in this scheme. He collaborated with Satpal Singh and Abhishek from Delhi. They opened multiple fake bank accounts using altered Aadhaar card details and rental agreements. Sachdeva and Singh then withdrew the fraudulent amounts using self-cheques.

Seizures details

The police seized one cheque book, two passbooks from different bank accounts, one mobile phone, and an Aadhaar card from Sachdeva.

The team, led by Inspector of Police K. Prasada Rao, with officers B. Manmohan, P.V. Srinivas, A. Sathish, G. Bhaskar, R. Murali Krishna, J. Venkatesh, and G. Kranthi Kumar, cracked the case under the supervision of ACP R.G. Siva Maruthi.

The Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police caution the public not to trust insurance schemes offered by unknown individuals online. Avoid investing in unauthorized websites or apps promising high returns. Report any suspicious activity to the authorities immediately.
