GHMC Acts on Property Tax Violations in CURE

HYDERABAD: Civic authorities have intensified a crackdown in the Core Urban Region (CURE) targeting properties that undervalue property tax and commercial establishments with pending arrears. Officials have already sealed several such units.
The CURE region includes 28,80,260 properties, and around 17 lakh have paid their taxes so far. Meanwhile, authorities plan to step up enforcement across the 2,053 sq km area covered by three civic bodies.
Major discrepancies flagged in property tax declarations
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) accounts for 11,45,321 properties. Similarly, Cyberabad Municipal Corporation (CMC) has 9,43,432 properties, while Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation (MMC) covers 7,91,507.
During the drive, officials identified three major discrepancies. First, many property owners undervalued taxes by declaring smaller plinth areas on self-assessment portals. In addition, several owners failed to include newly constructed floors under the tax net.
Moreover, authorities found that some owners used residential properties for commercial purposes but continued to pay taxes under lower residential slabs.
Data mapping with power utility to curb evasion
To tackle these issues, officials are now linking property tax identification numbers (PTINs) with unique service connections (USCs) of Telangana State Southern Power Distribution Company Limited.
As a result, authorities can detect mismatches in property usage and built-up area more accurately. According to a GHMC official, this integration will strengthen enforcement and reduce tax evasion.
Overall, the special drive will continue in phases, with a clear focus on improving compliance and recovering pending dues.
