Hyderabad court sentences Tanzanian to 12 years for possession of 3 kg heroin
Hyderabad: A Metropolitan Sessions Judge (MSJ) Court in L. B Nagar, Hyderabad, sentenced a Tanzanian national to twelve years of rigorous imprisonment on July 12, 2024 for carrying nearly 3 kilograms of heroin.
The recovered drugs, seized by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) on June 21, 2021, were valued at Rs. 19.37 crore.
On June 21, 2021, officials from the Hyderabad Zonal Unit of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) intercepted the passenger upon arrival at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA).
A thorough inspection revealed 2,980 grams of heroin cleverly concealed within their checked-in baggage. The contraband was seized, and the passenger was arrested under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.
Following a comprehensive investigation, a complaint was filed before the MSJ Court, Ranga Reddy District, L. B Nagar. After conducting the trial, the court concluded that the prosecution had convincingly proven the accused’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
The convict was found guilty under Section 23(c) of the NDPS Act and sentenced to twelve years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of Rs. 1,00,000 (Rupees one lakh only) under Section 235(2) of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973. In default of paying the fine, the convict will face an additional six months of simple imprisonment.
