Hyderabad court convicts man in 2019 POCSO case, awards 10-year jail term
HYDERABAD: A Special Sessions Court for Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act cases at HACA Bhavan has convicted a 45-year-old man in a 2019 child rape case registered at Banjara Hills police station. The court sentenced Mohammed Mohsin, a petrol pump helper and a resident of Film Nagar, to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment. It also imposed a fine of ₹10,000.
The court delivered the verdict in Sessions Case No. 443 of 2019 under Sections 376(2)(f) and 376(AB) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 6 read with Sections 5(m) and 5(n) of the POCSO Act, according to a Hyderabad City Police press note.
Police said the victim’s mother filed a complaint on May 22, 2019. She told police that her children slept at her brother-in-law’s house because her own home lacked enough space.
The complaint stated that the 12-year-old girl fell ill with vomiting on May 15, 2019. She complained of stomach pain the next day. On May 18, while bathing her daughter, the mother noticed stains on the child’s clothes. The girl then told her mother that the accused had allegedly raped her on May 13 while she was sweeping his house.
The girl also alleged that the accused had inappropriately touched her on two earlier occasions. She said he threatened her with serious consequences if she disclosed the incidents.
Banjara Hills police registered the case and launched an investigation. Investigators recorded the survivor’s statement at the Bharosa Centre.
Bharosa Centre provided counselling
The Bharosa Centre counselled the survivor and her family throughout the case. It also provided emotional support through regular follow-up sessions and workshops. According to Hyderabad City Police, the family expressed happiness after the conviction.
Police team credited for conviction
Police credited the conviction to the coordinated efforts of the investigating officers, prosecutors, legal counsellors, Bharosa Centre staff and other police personnel.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Women Safety) Dr Lavanya NJP, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Women Safety) Prasanna Lakshmi and Bharosa Inspector P. Padma monitored the investigation and trial, the press note said.
Hyderabad Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar appreciated the coordinated efforts of all stakeholders involved in securing the conviction.
