Hyderabad consumer court orders compensation in Bali honeymoon travel scam case

HYDERABAD: The Hyderabad District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission–I has directed a Pune-based travel agency to pay ₹60,000 as compensation for cheating a city couple during their honeymoon trip to Bali.

The commission found B2B DMC for Bali Travel Agency guilty of deficiency in service after it failed to provide the facilities promised under a honeymoon package booked by a Hyderabad resident.

According to the complaint, Nageshree Harsha, a resident of Aminpur, booked a Bali honeymoon tour scheduled from March 2 to March 9, 2025. He paid ₹1.70 lakh in two instalments to the agency, which assured flight tickets, hotel accommodation, local transport and end-to-end assistance.

However, after the couple reached Bali, the agency allegedly withdrew all support. None of the promised arrangements were available, leaving the newlyweds stranded in a foreign country. Repeated attempts to contact the agency through phone calls and emails went unanswered, the complaint said.

Distressed by the situation, the complainant approached the consumer commission seeking relief.

After examining the evidence, the Hyderabad District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission–I held that abandoning customers after collecting a substantial amount amounted to an unfair trade practice. It directed the travel agency to pay ₹60,000 as compensation for the mental agony and inconvenience caused to the complainant.

The order underlined that travel operators are accountable for services promised, particularly in overseas tour bookings, and consumers have the right to seek legal remedies in cases of service failure.
