TGHRC chief honours Hyderabad constable for flood rescue
HYDERABAD: Telangana Human Rights Commission (TGHRC) chairperson Justice Shameem Akther on Tuesday presented an appreciation letter to City Armed Reserve (CAR) head constable Sridhar Varma for rescuing a stranded woman during last week’s heavy rains in Hyderabad.
On the evening of September 4, the city recorded heavy rainfall that led to waist-deep flooding on several stretches in Banjara Hills. Sridhar, who was on duty as part of the escort staff attached to the chairperson, noticed a 22-year-old woman, Nainika, stranded at a bus stop on Road No. 3.
Nainika, an MBA student in Australia who was visiting her family in Ramanthapur, was left at the bus stop by her brother. With her phone damaged by water and frightened due to her hydrophobia, she was unable to contact her family. Sridhar reached her through the floodwaters, offered his police jerkin for comfort, reassured her and contacted her relatives. As cab services were unavailable, he drove her to her home in Vanasthalipuram, taking over two hours through waterlogged streets. She was safely reunited with her mother late that night.
The incident drew wide attention in newspapers and on social media, with many praising the constable’s courage. Justice Akther commended his effort, describing it as an act of compassion and duty beyond routine service. “Such actions uphold the true spirit of policing and human rights protection,” he said.
