Spectacled Cobra In Urban Hyderabad Habitat

HYDERABAD: Hyderabad may be witnessing a growing presence of spectacled cobras, with a recent study indicating a steady rise in their numbers across the city.

The study analysed snake rescues between 2013 and 2022. It found that the oriental rat snake remained the most commonly encountered species. Its share rose from 13 per cent of rescues in 2013 to 24 per cent in 2022.

Decadal snake rescue data highlights shifting urban ecology

In contrast, cobras showed a higher proportional increase. They accounted for 42 per cent of rescued snakes in 2013, rising to 48 per cent in 2022.

The findings are part of a study titled “Urban snake ecology revealed through the lens of decadal data on snake rescues in a megacity”, published in the journal Global Ecology and Conservation.

Avinash C Visvanathan, principal author and member of the Friends of Snakes Society, said urban landscapes are evolving in ways that favour certain species. “It is clear from our study that cobras are thriving, while other species may be dwindling,” he said.

He added that awareness and ecological planning are essential. “There is a need for increased awareness about snakes. Amid changing landscapes, we have to ensure greenery and ecological islands,” he said.

Experts link growth to food availability and urban habitats

Wildlife researchers attribute the trend to favourable urban conditions. They point to the availability of shelter in drains, crevices and built structures.

Food supply is another key factor. Discarded waste has led to a rise in rodent populations, which serve as prey for snakes. “When food is abundant, snake populations tend to increase,” a wildlife researcher said.
