Class 9 student injured in ‘birthday bumps’ at Hyderabad school

HYDERABAD: A “birthday bumps” prank at Delhi Public School, Nacharam, left a Class 9 student with serious injuries, forcing doctors to perform surgery.
The incident occurred on August 29 during the lunch break when the boy’s classmates held him down and repeatedly hit him as part of the so-called birthday bumps ritual. He sustained severe injuries to his private parts, causing swelling and bleeding.
School principal immediately shifted the injured boy to a nearby hospital and informed his parents. The parents later admitted him to a private hospital in Banjara Hills, where doctors carried out surgery. Medical advice has made three months of bed rest mandatory.
Doctors said the surgery to his testicles averted a life-threatening risk.
Nacharam police said: “Based on the complaint from the boy’s family, a case has been registered against the responsible students and the school management.”
Mother of victim stated in complaint to police “Like every day, he went to school that morning. At around 12:40–12:50 PM, some of his classmates played a game called “birthday bumps” inside the classroom. During this, one student forcefully hit my son’s private parts with his knee while other students also pressed him. Because of this, he had severe pain, swelling and bleeding injuries.”
“My son immediately informed the Vice Principal about the incident, and the Vice Principal called me. I rushed to the school and then took my son to Prasad Hospital for initial treatment. Due to the seriousness of the injuries, the doctors referred him to another hospital, and later he was admitted to Narmada Hospital, Gandhi Nagar. There, doctors confirmed that his testicle was damaged and referred him to Care Hospital, Banjara Hills, for surgery.”
“My son underwent surgery on 30.08.2025. The doctors told me he needs complete bed rest for three months and that his full condition will be known only after that period. necessary action should be against the students involved and also against the school section in-charge for their negligence and delay in providing timely treatment to my son.”
