Hyderabad City Police warn public on cyber fraud
HYDERABAD: The Hyderabad City Police have issued a public advisory on preventing cyber fraud and reporting online scams.
The police urged citizens to remain cautious about investment and trading offers circulated through WhatsApp and Telegram groups, especially those promising “guaranteed returns” or “insider tips”. Before investing in any trading platform or application, investors should verify whether it is registered with the Securities and Exchange Board of India.
Beware of ‘digital arrest’ claims
The police clarified that no investigating agency — including the Central Bureau of Investigation, police, Customs or the Enforcement Directorate — conducts arrests or inquiries through video calls.
No government agency asks individuals to transfer money to “verify” funds or remove their names from cases. Citizens should immediately disconnect such calls.
Do not share OTPs or bank accounts
The advisory asked people not to share one-time passwords with strangers, click on unverified links, or download remote-access applications such as AnyDesk or TeamViewer.
Citizens were warned against renting, selling or lending their bank accounts to others. Allowing accounts to be used for illegal money transfers makes the account holder liable as an accomplice and could invite legal action.
Act within the ‘golden hour’
Victims who suspect cyber fraud must act immediately, the police said. Complaints should be lodged within one to two hours of the offence. Early reporting increases the chances of freezing funds in the accused persons’ bank accounts.
Victims should dial the national cybercrime helpline 1930 without delay. Complaints can also be filed online through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal at www.cybercrime.gov.in.
For registration of a First Information Report, victims may approach the nearest cybercrime police station or local police station. Citizens can also use C-Mitra services to file e-FIRs.
The Hyderabad City Police said they are committed to ensuring a safe digital environment for all citizens. Strict action will continue against individuals and networks involved in or aiding cybercrime.
