Hyderabad plans 650-acre bullet train hub near airport at Shamshabad

HYDERABAD: The state government has identified around 650 acres at Bahadurguda near Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Shamshabad, to build a dedicated bullet train hub. This hub will serve proposed high-speed rail corridors linking Hyderabad with Bengaluru, Chennai, and Mumbai, officials said.
The land falls under survey numbers 28 and 62. Since the state already owns the parcel, officials expect the acquisition process to move smoothly. Meanwhile, revenue authorities have started demarcating the boundaries.
DPR Timeline and Project Planning
Officials said the Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for the Hyderabad–Chennai and Hyderabad–Bengaluru corridors will likely be ready between September 2026 and March 2027. In addition, the DPR for the Hyderabad–Mumbai corridor is expected in the financial year 2027–28.
Earlier in February, the Railway Board assigned the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited to fast-track seven new high-speed rail projects announced in the Union Budget 2026–27, including the three Hyderabad-linked routes.
The board also directed officials to form dedicated core teams. It asked them to set up project-specific headquarters and begin pre-construction work and contract documentation.
Travel Time to Drop Sharply
The Hyderabad–Chennai bullet train will cut travel time to about two hours and 55 minutes. Similarly, the Hyderabad–Bengaluru route will reduce the journey to just one hour and 13 minutes.
As a result, officials expect these corridors to improve regional connectivity. They also believe the projects will boost industrial growth and economic activity across major cities.
Indigenous Bullet Trains in Focus
India will deploy indigenous “B28” bullet trains on these routes. These trains can reach a maximum speed of 280 kmph and will run at an operational speed of 250 kmph. Testing is scheduled for 2027.
The railway ministry has set a March 2027 deadline to roll out the first indigenous bullet train. The BEML is manufacturing these trains at its Bengaluru facility.
The B28 trainsets will offer fully air-conditioned chair car coaches. They will also include reclining and rotatable seats, accessibility features for passengers with reduced mobility, and onboard infotainment systems.
