Hyderabad: BRS MLAs detained after protest at Assembly gate

Harish

HYDERABAD: Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) MLAs and MLCs were stopped by police at the Assembly gate after they tried to enter the premises wearing black T-shirts carrying slogans.

Police objected to the T-shirts, following which Harish Rao and several other BRS MLAs removed them and staged a protest in their vests at the spot. An argument broke out between the two sides.

Police detained Harish Rao and other BRS MLAs following the protest.

BRS MLA Sunitha Lakshma Reddy breaks down

At another entrance to the Assembly, BRS MLA Sunitha Lakshma Reddy broke down and alleged that police had behaved inhumanely towards her.

Meanwhile, former minister Jagadish Reddy collapsed and fainted amid the protests.

Police cite objectionable words on T-shirts

Khairatabad Zone Deputy Commissioner of Police Shilpavali said police did not permit the BRS legislators to enter because the black T-shirts carried objectionable words.

“Black T-shirts are not a crime. They were not allowed inside only because of the words written on them. Police did not behave indecently with the BRS MLAs. We will examine the allegations made by BRS leaders about the conduct of the police. We will examine the videos related to the incident at the Assembly gate. Police acted as per the Speaker’s instructions,” she said.
