On Wednesday evening, Aishwarya brought both children home from school. After a short while, she and the boys took the lift to the upper floor.

Lift moves suddenly; child crushed

Aishwarya and elder son Chaithvik stepped out on their floor and entered their flat. Harshavardhan, however, did not get out. At that moment, the spring door fitted in front of the lift closed suddenly, and the lift moved down at once. The child was caught between the spring door and the metal grill.

The lift stopped between the fourth and fifth floors, trapping Harshavardhan inside. He initially screamed loudly but soon lost consciousness as he struggled to breathe.

Residents rescue boy; doctors declare him dead

When Aishwarya came out and looked down the shaft, she saw Harshavardhan stuck between two floors. Her cries alerted the security guard and neighbours, who freed the boy with great difficulty. He was shifted in a 108 ambulance to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Police said the case is under inquiry.
