How AI Is Powering Hyderabad Police’s Bonalu Security Plan
HYDERABAD: Hyderabad Police Commissioner V C Sajjanar, along with his family, offered Bonam to Goddess Sri Ujjaini Mahankali at the Sri Ujjaini Mahankali Temple in Secunderabad on Sunday as part of the Ashada Bonalu celebrations. He said the festival has deep historical significance for Hyderabad. He added that devotees are celebrating it in a peaceful, devotional and festive atmosphere.
Security tightened for Bonalu celebrations
Sajjanar said the Bonalu celebrations at Golconda and Balkampet concluded peacefully. Meanwhile, festivities at the Sri Ujjaini Mahankali and Lal Darwaza temples are now taking place on a large scale.
To ensure devotees’ safety, the Hyderabad City Police deployed around 2,500 personnel for bandobast at the Sri Ujjaini Mahankali Temple. He said the force has made elaborate security arrangements to manage the large crowds.
AI system to monitor crowds and identify offenders
For the first time, Hyderabad Police have introduced an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based crowd management and surveillance system at the Sri Ujjaini Mahankali Temple. The system will help police manage the increasing number of devotees more effectively.
The AI platform integrates CCTV cameras installed around the temple with Facial Recognition Technology. As a result, it can identify habitual offenders, chain-snatchers and pickpockets in real time. Police teams can then respond quickly to prevent crimes.
In addition, the system tracks the movement of devotees entering and leaving the temple. It also analyses crowd density across different sections and queue lines through threshold mapping. If the crowd exceeds safe limits, the system immediately alerts officials. They can then take preventive measures to avoid stampedes or other untoward incidents.
Police appeal for cooperation
Meanwhile, Sajjanar said the police are working closely with the Endowments Department, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and other government departments. Together, they aim to ensure the smooth conduct of the festival.
Finally, he appealed to devotees to offer prayers peacefully and cooperate with the police. He said public cooperation is essential for the successful completion of the Bonalu celebrations.
