Mass fish kill in Raa Cheruvu leaves Boduppal residents, fishers in distress
HYDERABAD: A serious environmental disaster occurred at Raa Cheruvu, a lake in the Boduppal Circle of the Medchal constituency. More than ten tonnes of fish died after chemicals were released into the lake at night. The next day, people discovered the problem. As a result, the smell of the dead fish has made life difficult for people living nearby. Furthermore, many fishers who depended on the lake for their income have lost their primary source of income.
Meanwhile, Vangari Saikumar, spokesperson of the Jana Sena Party, told HyderabadMail that the pollution happened around midnight. He said chemicals were probably released from a factory near the lake, possibly connected to the Mallapur industrial area. By morning, the lake was filled with dead fish, many weighing more than two or three kilograms. In total, the number of dead fish is estimated to be between ten and fifteen tonnes.

This disaster is even worse because about ten tonnes of fish had already been caught and sold earlier this month. In fact, buyers from Ramnagar Market visited the lake several times, collecting tonnes each time. Now, this fish kill has wiped out the remaining fish and has raised concerns about whether fishing in the lake can continue in the future.
Dead fish cause severe stench for nearby residents
However, the problem is not just the dead fish. The strong smell from the decaying fish has made life very hard for people living nearby. Even though the situation is serious, residents said that no government agency has responded or admitted how bad the problem is. The lake is on the road from Chilkanagar to Boduppal. People in the area call it Raa Cheruvu.
In response, Vangari Saikumar, spokesperson for the Jana Sena Party in Telangana, issued a statement urging the state government to act immediately. Specifically, he wants a full investigation to determine where the chemicals came from and to ensure those responsible are punished for the harm to the environment and to fishers’ incomes.
Additionally, Saikumar asked the government to provide adequate compensation to help the affected fishers, whose main source of income was lost overnight. He also shared photos of the event on social media to draw attention to the crisis and push the authorities to act quickly.
