Telangana sees surge in beer sales amid heatwave

HYDERABAD: Rising temperatures and humid conditions have pushed beer consumption sharply in Telangana, with drinkers turning to chilled beer for relief from the heat.
According to Telangana Beverages Corporation Limited data, beer sales across liquor shops, bars and clubs rose by 22 per cent in March compared with the same month last year. Sales increased from 30 lakh cases in March 2025 to a record 50.78 lakh cases in March 2026, the highest in the past five years.
Sales rise steadily from early months of year
The growth trend began early in the year. Beer sales rose from 31 lakh cases in January 2025 to 34 lakh cases in January 2026. In February, sales jumped from 28 lakh cases last year to 38 lakh cases this year. The increase accelerated from the last week of February as temperatures climbed.
In April, sales have already reached 21 lakh cases within the first 13 days. At present, daily sales average between 1.7 lakh and 1.8 lakh cases.
Water shortage may hit production and supply
Excise department officials said demand is likely to rise further in May. However, falling water levels in the Manjeera river, a key source for beer manufacturing units, have raised concerns over production.
If water shortages worsen, production could decline, leading to supply constraints. Officials warned that meeting demand may become difficult if output drops.
To prevent shortages, authorities have increased supply from depots to retail outlets and stepped up production by 10 to 12 per cent compared with last year. Stock levels in warehouses have also been increased from the usual 15 days to 35 days.
Despite these measures, officials said sustaining supply could be challenging if demand continues to rise. Annual beer sales, which usually range between 450 lakh and 500 lakh cases, are expected to exceed 600 lakh cases this year.
