HYDERABAD: Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) Commissioner AV Ranganath has directed officials to expedite lake development works in the city.

He instructed them to remove sewage from lakes immediately and ensure that the Full Tank Level (FTL) limits are not reduced under any circumstances.

Ranganath inspected Gangaram Lake in Ramachandrapuram and Eerla Lake on Wednesday. Both lakes are among the 14 identified under HYDRAA’s second phase of development.

Officials review sewage diversion plan

During the inspection, the commissioner examined reasons for foul odour in the lakes. He noted that sewage was entering directly from multiple localities, apart from the stormwater drain.

He reviewed measures to prevent direct inflow of sewage into lakes. All drains must be connected to a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP), and only treated water should be allowed into the lakes, he said.

FTL limits must not shrink

Gangaram Lake spreads over 111 acres, while Eerla Lake covers 32 acres.

Ranganath directed officials not to reduce the FTL limits of these lakes. He asked them to safeguard the buffer zone and adjoining government land.

He also instructed officials to develop parks, children’s play areas and seating spaces around the lakes. Adequate space must be reserved for planting tall shade-giving trees.

Land should also be earmarked for setting up STPs and constructing sedimentation ponds to prevent untreated sewage from entering the lakes.

HYDRAA Additional Director Varlapapayya and other officials accompanied the commissioner during the visit.
