Hyderabad Auto Driver Ends Life After Drunk Drive Case

HYDERABAD: An auto driver died by suicide near the Malkajgiri police station late on Tuesday night, hours after being caught during a drunk-and-drive check.

Driver caught in drunk-and-drive check hours before incident

Police said the driver, identified as Meen Reddy, was stopped on Tuesday evening for a breathalyser test that showed a reading of 120. A case was registered against him and his auto was seized.

Around midnight, Meen Reddy reportedly poured petrol on himself and set himself ablaze near the Kushaiguda traffic police station. Locals and traffic police rushed to douse the flames and shifted him to a nearby hospital, but he succumbed on the way.

Officers identified the deceased as a resident of Dammaiguda. His body was shifted to Gandhi Hospital for postmortem examination.

Family alleges police harassment led to suicide

Family members alleged that Meen Reddy took the extreme step because of the alleged rude behaviour of the police during the drunk-and-drive check. Police have launched an inquiry into the incident.
