Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, located in Shamshabad about 24 kilometers (15 miles) south of Hyderabad, opened on March 23, 2008, to replace Begumpet Airport.

It is named after Rajiv Gandhi, former Prime Minister of India. Covering an area of 5,500 acres (2,200 hectares), it is the largest airport in India by area. Owned and operated by GMR Hyderabad International Airport Limited (GHIAL), a public-private consortium, it was the first airport in India to launch domestic e-boarding in December 2015 and international e-boarding in October 2020.

According to AirHelp, the airport ranks among the top 10 airports in the world and is the fourth busiest airport in India by passenger traffic. Between April 2023 and March 2024, it handled over 25 million passengers and around 150,000 tonnes of cargo.
