RGIA handles 78 lakh passengers in three months
HYDERABAD: Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) at Shamshabad handled 78.09 lakh passengers in the first three months of the current financial year, averaging about 90,000 passengers a day, according to Airports Authority of India (AAI) data.
Passenger traffic at the airport continues to grow, placing Hyderabad among the country’s busiest aviation hubs. Delhi airport topped the country in passenger traffic, followed by Mumbai and Bengaluru, while Hyderabad ranked fourth.
Between April and June, Delhi handled 203.26 lakh passengers, Mumbai 128.78 lakh, Bengaluru 112.59 lakh, Hyderabad 78.09 lakh and Chennai 53.87 lakh.
Hyderabad ranks high among fast-growing airports
Hyderabad airport ranked first in passenger service and second among airports recording significant growth, according to the AAI figures cited in the report.
The West Asia conflict and its aftermath, along with uncertainty over higher education in the US, had a marginal impact on passenger movement. Airport authorities plan to increase traffic by offering more services to domestic passengers.
Recent reporting also shows that West Asia flight disruptions affected Hyderabad airport traffic, particularly international travel, during April.
Airport targets five crore passengers by 2031
According to AAI data cited in the source, an average of about 90,000 passengers travel through Shamshabad airport every day. If the trend continues over the remaining nine months of the financial year, the airport could cross the three-crore passenger mark in 2026-27.
Passengers from Telangana as well as Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Karnataka use Hyderabad airport for their travel. Frequent national and international conferences and meetings in Hyderabad are also contributing to passenger traffic.
Airport authorities are drawing up plans to reach the five-crore annual passenger mark by 2031. Recent reports on the airport’s expansion plans also cite a capacity target of five crore passengers by 2031.
