Hyderabad AI scientist loses ₹85 lakh in crypto fraud

HYDERABAD: Cyber fraudsters posing as a prospective bride duped an Artificial Intelligence scientist from the city of ₹85 lakh through a crypto-investment scam, police said on Saturday.
City Cyber Crime police registered a case after receiving a complaint from a 32-year-old resident of Nallakunta, who recently completed his PhD in AI and began working as a scientist.
According to police, the accused contacted him on a matrimonial website using the name Monica Reddy. Posing as a tax expert living in Scotland, the fraudster developed regular communication with him.
On June 17, she told him that her cousin was a specialist in cryptocurrency investments and promised monthly returns of 10%–20%. After he agreed, she sent him a link to an app named Global TRX, asking him to invest through it.
The complainant transferred ₹85 lakh through the app over multiple transactions. Soon after receiving the amount, the fraudsters disabled the app’s functions, preventing him from accessing the account.
Realising he had been cheated, the scientist approached the City Cyber Crime police station, where a case was registered. Investigation is under way, police added.
