DMHO Hyderabad action against unregistered private hospitals

HYDERABAD: As many as 224 private hospitals in Hyderabad are set to receive notices from the district medical and health officer (DMHO) for operating without mandatory registration, a basic requirement to run any healthcare facility.

The action follows a survey initiated by district collector Harichandana Dasari to identify cases of quackery and unregistered hospitals. The survey found that the facilities were functioning without registration under the DMHO.

Explaining the procedure, official sources said that hospitals run by qualified and licensed doctors would be issued showcause notices and given three days to submit explanations. “Since they are qualified professionals, they are expected to be aware of the rules. They will be asked to temporarily close the facility until all required documents are submitted and registration is completed,” a source said.

The approach will be stricter in cases involving unqualified individuals running healthcare centres. “If the survey finds that unqualified professionals are operating hospitals, the facilities will be closed immediately. The DMHO will report such cases to the Telangana Medical Council, and FIRs will be registered against the quacks,” the official added.

Speaking to a Journalist, Telangana Medical Council vice-chairman Gundagani Srinivas said the district registration authority was empowered to act against erring hospitals. “We are awaiting detailed information from the DMHO. Once action is initiated, we will be informed to take further steps,” he said.

Dr Srinivas said penalties would be imposed based on the nature of violations of National Medical Commission norms. “The fines will range from ₹50,000 to ₹5 lakh,” he added.

He also said that over the past two years, the council had filed more than 600 cases against quacks for causing harm to the lives of common people.
