HMWSSB MD orders acceleration of Sunkishala Project and debris clearance works

Hyderabad: Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) Managing Director Ashok Reddy on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, visited the Sunkishala Project site near Nagarjuna Sagar to review ongoing construction works.
Accompanied by senior officials, the MD inspected key components of the project, including pipeline expansion and the intake well construction. During the visit, he explained the importance of maintaining quality standards and urged the executing agency to focus on the timely completion of pipeline extension works.
Ashok Reddy stated that civil, tunnel, electrical, and pipeline works are currently underway. Tunnel and electrical works are nearing completion, while civil works are still progressing. He directed officials to expedite the removal of debris from the retaining wall and take steps to complete it without delay.
He also visited the area where the retaining wall near the intake tunnel gate had tilted. After inspecting the site, he asked officials about the status of debris removal and instructed them to accelerate the process. He also told the construction company representatives to submit designs for reconstruction immediately and asked officials to set clear timelines for completing the side wall rebuilding.
Officials briefed the MD on the construction of a ropeway above the pump room, which is being built to assist in the removal of cement debris. Cranes have been arranged specifically for this task.
The MD also reviewed the middle tunnel works near the pump room and advised that bund construction and tunnel plugging should be completed before the onset of monsoon. He suggested working in two shifts to meet the deadline.
He further instructed officials to install gates at the reservoir end of all intake tunnels to help reduce pressure on retaining walls. Screens should also be installed to prevent debris, including trees and other objects, from entering the system during floods.
The Sunkishala intake project is being constructed to ensure a reliable drinking water supply to Hyderabad, even when water levels in the Nagarjuna Sagar reservoir fall to dead storage. The reservoir has a dead storage capacity of 131 TMC, with usable water up to a level of 510 feet.
The review meeting was attended by Project Director T.V. Sridhar, CGM Mahesh, other senior engineers, project staff, and representatives of the construction companies.
