Musi River In Hyderabad With Existing Bridges As Hmda Plans 29 New Bridges Under Master Plan 2050

HYDERABAD: The Musi river could have 46 bridges by 2050 if authorities implement proposals under the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority’s (HMDA) Master Plan 2050.

The Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP), prepared as a precursor to the master plan for the Hyderabad Metropolitan Region (HMR), proposes 29 new bridges across the Musi. Currently, 17 bridges span the river within the city limits.

Bridges planned along 55-km river stretch

HMDA officials said the proposed bridges fall within the 55-km stretch identified for the Musi Riverfront Development Project.

The corridor extends from the twin reservoirs at Gandipet to Gowrelly village in Hayatnagar mandal of Ranga Reddy district.

If authorities implement the proposals, the river could have a bridge almost every kilometre along the developed stretch.

Earlier heritage bridge plan shelved

Authorities had earlier discussed constructing new bridges under the Musi Riverfront Development initiative.

The previous Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) government proposed 14 high-level heritage bridges and planned to renovate and remodel several existing structures.

Officials identified locations including Chaderghat, Ibrahimbagh, Musarambagh, Afzalgunj, Uppal, Manchirevula, Hydershakote, Pratapsingaram, Bandlaguda Jagir, Sun City, Budvel and Attapur. Authorities also planned a dedicated bridge for hawkers displaced by the Charminar Pedestrianisation Project.

The government invited bridge designs through an architectural competition, and officials travelled to Paris to study bridges on the Seine river.

Only Musarambagh bridge work continues

Authorities finalised tenders and began foundation work for six bridges ahead of the 2023 elections.

However, the new government largely halted the project after the change in administration. Work continues only on the Musarambagh bridge, where crews began construction after demolishing the old structure.

CMP likely next month

Officials said the Comprehensive Mobility Plan is in its final stages and authorities may unveil it next month.

The mobility plan forms one of three key technical studies commissioned by HMDA for Master Plan 2050. The other two include the Economic Development Plan and the Blue-Green Infrastructure Plan.
