HYDERABAD: Actor Hema said allegations in a drug case pushed her into severe mental distress and made her consider ending her life. She spoke at a “Meet the Press” organised by the Film Critics Association at the Telugu Film Chamber on Monday.

Hema said the accusations in the drug case deeply affected her mental health. “At that time, I felt like ending my life. I was that disturbed,” she said. She added that she had not committed any wrongdoing and was ultimately cleared of the charges.

Family affected by media reports

She alleged that some media organisations carried unverified reports against her. “My family suffered a lot. It was a very difficult period for us,” she said. She added that not all media could be treated alike and expressed confidence that responsible organisations would support her. She said she hoped the media would be fair in the future.

Film Critics Association president Battula Prasad Rao said Hema was distressed over media coverage and was invited to share her views. “This platform allows her to speak directly to the media,” he said, adding that journalists too had faced discrimination.

Industry and media ties remain strong

Honorary president Prabhu said the film industry and media had traditionally maintained cordial relations. He said misinformation had increased due to social media. “Hema proved her innocence in court. But when she faced allegations, many criticised her. After she got relief, there was no positive response,” he said.

General secretary Suresh Kondeti said Hema had played diverse roles and held positions in the Movie Artistes Association. He said she had supported many, especially women facing issues. “Despite her courage, she had to endure distress due to false reports. She is now happy after being cleared in the case,” he said.

Several association members and media representatives attended the event. Hema addressed the controversies surrounding her and shared her experiences.
