Around 597 hazardous trees spark safety concerns in Hyderabad
HYDERABAD: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has identified 597 old, dried, dead, and unsafe trees across the city, sparking a pressing call for immediate action to prevent potential disasters.
This revelation comes in the wake of a tragic incident that claimed the life of Devender, a resident of Tumkunta, and left his wife, Sunita, critically injured. Devender and Sunita were on their way to the Cantonment Hospital in Bollarum on Tuesday morning when a massive, decayed tree fell on them, killing Devender instantly and seriously injuring Sunita.
Local warn about the Tree’s
Locals had long warned about the tree’s dangerous condition, noting its increasingly precarious lean after recent heavy rains.
In response to such hazards, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) team has inspected various zones and found that Secunderabad has 204 dangerous trees, LB Nagar has 119, and Kukatpally has 106.
The GHMC authority has recommended the removal of 530 trees, the translocation of 57, and the pruning of 10. The ultimate goal is to mitigate the risks posed to the citizens by these unstable trees, especially as the monsoon season approaches. The locals demand the GHMC authority take swift action and shift the trees.
Uday Krishna, founder of the Vata Foundation, opines that the report from GHMC appears to be merely nominal, lacking in comprehensive detail. He believes that identifying all trees in Hyderabad within a short time is impractical and suggests that determining tree species, removal methods, and minimising impacts on the surrounding areas would require significant time and effort.
Furthermore, Uday Krishna expresses scepticism about the report’s authenticity, noting that GHMC has not provided any information regarding tree removal or felling activities. He concludes by stating that, as of now, there has been no communication regarding such matters from GHMC authorities.
