Telangana doctor removes 1,820 kidney stones in surgery

HYDERABAD: A complex kidney surgery was successfully performed at a private hospital in Hanumakonda, senior urologist Dr Ramprasad Reddy said on Saturday. The operation took place at Sri Srinivasa Kidney Centre, located opposite Veerystham Bala temple in Hanumakonda.
Patient from Jangaon undergoes rare procedure
Parashuramulu, the patient from Nellutla village in Lingalaghanpur mandal of Jangaon district, admitted himself to the hospital on September 23 with severe kidney pain. Dr Reddy examined him and revealed an unusually high number of stones in the kidney. He carried out the surgery using the multi-track PCNL (percutaneous nephrolithotomy) method, in which they removed 1,820 stones in a single sitting. According to Dr Reddy, the patient had earlier consulted several hospitals in Hanumakonda and Hyderabad. Doctors there had suggested two to three surgeries, warning that complete stone removal might not be possible. They also estimated the cost at ₹3.5 lakh.
Surgery done under Aarogyasri scheme
Dr Reddy said his hospital performed the surgery free of cost under the Aarogyasri scheme, successfully removing all 1,820 stones. The patient was discharged within 72 hours of recovery.
