Telangana govt alters school timings for Urdu medium schools during Ramadan

Hyderabad: In view of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, the Telangana government on Saturday announced half-day timings for the Urdu medium schools, Urdu medium sections of parallel medium schools and Urdu medium sections of DIETs in the state.
The school hours have been adjusted to accommodate students of Urdu schools. The state government has issued an order announcing the change in the school schedule with revised timings being 8 am to 1.30 pm from March 2 to April 1, 2025 (both days inclusive).
The decision has been made to ensure teachers and students can observe the holy month of Islam without disruption following a request from the teachers of Urdu medium schools, Urdu medium sections of parallel medium schools and Urdu medium sections of DIETs.
Following a representation from the teachers of Urdu schools, the TMREIS vice-chairman and president, Mohammed Faheemuddin Qureshi took up the matter with the state government and requested for change of school timings during the holy month of Ramadan 2025, enabling the teachers and students to devote more time for offering prayers, according to a press release.
Earlier, the Telangana government granted permission to all government employees, including teachers, contract staff, outsourcing workers, and employees of boards, corporations, and public sector units, to leave their offices and schools an hour early during the holy month of Ramadan. The early leave at 4 pm will be effective from March 2, 2025, to March 31, 2025 (both days inclusive).
This decision allows Muslim employees to leave work early to offer necessary prayers, except in cases where their presence is required due to service exigencies.
Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, is a time for fasting, reflection, and congregational prayers for Muslims. Fasting from dawn to sunset is obligatory for all adult Muslims, except those with certain exemptions such as illness or pregnancy. The daily fast is broken at sunset with a meal called iftar, following the pre-dawn meal, suhur.
