Waning Zeal and Motivation Among Greater Hyderabad Voters

Greater Hyderabad Voting

HYDERABAD: Hyderabad residents refrained from venturing out to cast their votes this time also, leading to a notably low polling percentage in Greater Hyderabad, particularly in Hyderabad Lok Sabha constituency with just 46.08 percentage voter turnout. Initially, polling centers appeared deserted, but later, they buzzed with activity.

The zeal to participate in voting seems to have waned among new voters, with talk circulating about a shift in Hyderabad voters’ attitudes due to the repetitive nature of elections, irrespective of the Election Commission’s efforts. The motivation to exercise the voting right appears to be lacking across the board.

Record Low Participation in Greater Hyderabad

As polling day coincided with a holiday, individuals confined themselves to their homes. Additionally, with the allure of a three-day break, many Hyderabad residents opted for weekend getaways outside the city. If this trend persists, there is a risk of more people planning leisure trips instead of voting, as authorities struggle to mobilize voters in Hyderabad. On polling day, individuals either stayed home or engaged in leisure activities with family elsewhere, neglecting their voting responsibilities.

Greater Hyderabad has witnessed a record low polling percentage. Officials reported that only 34.19% of registered voters in the Bahadurpur constituency participated in the Lok Sabha elections. Despite escalating efforts, Hyderabadis appear disinterested in voting.

With several demographics failing to surpass the 40% threshold, the Election Commission expressed surprise. Attempts to boost voter turnout have proven futile this time. Notably, the prohibition of cell phones at polling stations has dissuaded many young voters, as indicated by a recent study.

As per Election Commission of India final disclosers on their site, total voter turnout in Telangana recorded as 64.93 percentage. Most voters in Hyderabad seemed to have emulated Rip Van Winkle, choosing to remain in a purposeful stupor and abstain from engaging in the process that would shape their future for the upcoming five years. The voter turnout in Hyderabad, comprising 22,17,305 eligible voters, stood at 46.08 percent. Malkajgiri, the largest Lok Sabha constituency in India recorded 50.12% turnout which is slightly better than Hyderabad and Secunderabad, which recorded 48.11 % voting.
