Concerns Raised Over Fish Deaths And Pollution In Gopanpally Lake

Hyderabad: Residents of Tellapur are expressing concerns over the increasing pollution and fish deaths in Gopanpally Lake, also known as Chinna Pedda Cheruvu. The residents allege that untreated sewage water is being directly released into the lake, causing harm to aquatic life.

A resident of Tellapur spoke with the Hyderabad Mail about the situation. “Gopanpally Lake has been plagued with hundreds of fish deaths. The direct release of untreated sewage water from the Sewage Treatment Plant is the main cause,” the resident said. “We urge the authorities to take immediate action to clean the lake.”

They also highlighted other issues in the area, including illegal debris dumping and poor infrastructure. “Gopanpally has become a dumping ground. From Gowlidoddi to Tellapur, illegal dumping of debris is polluting the lake,” the resident said. “Streetlights are not functioning properly, and the increase in liquor shops has led to vehicles parking on the roads. This contributes to reckless behavior, making the area unsafe.”

In addition, the resident raised concerns about the growing number of water tankers, which he claims are depleting groundwater resources. They also highlighted the need for proper treatment of sewage water before it is released into the lake.

The residents of nearby communities, including Muppas Green Grandeur and Skywoofs, have also voiced their concerns over the illegal dumping of garbage and debris into the lake. These activities, they say, are creating both an environmental and health crisis. They also reported issues such as encroachment on footpaths and unauthorized extraction of lake water, further exacerbating the problem.

A resident of Tellapur mentioned that these issues have been worsening since 2021, with significant changes in the area, including the extraction of water from the lake.

Residents are now calling on the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) to take immediate action to address the pollution, illegal dumping, and other issues around Gopanpally Lake. The lake, which falls under the jurisdiction of GHMC, requires urgent intervention to prevent further damage and protect the local environment.
