Golconda couple held for kidnapping child to force remarriage

HYDERABAD: A divorced couple who decided to remarry were arrested on Sunday for allegedly kidnapping a four-year-old girl to convince family elders to accept their marriage, South West Zone additional deputy commissioner of police Krishnagoud said.
Couple planned kidnapping to secure family approval
According to police, Mohammed Fayaz, 25, of Hakimpet, married Salma Begum alias Sameen, 24, of Golconda, five years ago. The pair separated within a short period and Fayaz, an auto driver, later married another woman while living in Hakimpet.
Over the past two years, Fayaz had been meeting his first wife regularly. The two recently decided to remarry, but Fayaz’s parents opposed the plan.
Girl taken from outside home in Salehnagar
Police said Fayaz told his parents that Salma Begum had been pregnant at the time of their divorce and that a girl had been born later. To support this claim, the couple allegedly planned to kidnap a child.
On September 21 afternoon, Salma Begum allegedly lured four-year-old Safiya Begum, who was playing outside her home in Salehnagar, and took her away. Fayaz then took Salma Begum and the child to his house in Hakimpet. His second wife was away at her parents’ home at the time.
CCTV helped track accused to Hakimpet home
The child’s parents lodged a complaint at Golconda police station the same evening. Based on CCTV footage, police identified Fayaz’s auto and traced the child to his residence.
Police detained Fayaz and Salma Begum on Sunday morning and rescued the child from the same house. Officers seized the auto and two mobile phones from the accused.
Golconda inspector B. Saidulu and Tolichowki division assistant commissioner of police Syed Fayaz attended the press meet.
