After Jatayu vacuum machine, GHMC to place 1,000 smart garbage bins across Hyderabad

News in short:
Hyderabad's Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is taking a two-pronged approach to address the persistent issue of garbage on its streets. Firstly, they are reintroducing large, sensor-equipped "smart bins" with a capacity of 450-500 kg. These bins will alert authorities when full, ensuring prompt pick-up. 1,000 smart bins will be placed initially, focusing on areas with high commercial activity. Secondly, the GHMC is deploying a contactless vacuum-operated garbage collection machine called "Jatayu Super." This machine efficiently removes all types of litter and trash, minimizing manual handling and speeding up garbage collection in busy public areas. Both initiatives aim to improve waste management and keep the city clean, but their success ultimately depends on citizens' cooperation in using the bins properly.

Hyderabad: During the first term of KCR-led BRS government, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation took up a major clean and green Hyderabad city drive and replaced the neighbourhood garbage bins with household dustbins.

A decade later, the municipal authorities are still finding garbage on the streets and roads. The authorities have decided to bring back the huge garbage bins in the neighborhoods. These bins labelled as smart bins will have a capacity of 450-500 kg and come with a sensor which will alert the sanitary inspectors when it reaches the capacity.

Initially, the GHMC plans to install 1,000 smart bins across the city. The smart bins will have a unique ID number which will be tracked and monitored at the command control room set up at the GHMC headquarters.

As soon as the authorities receive an alert, the pick-up vans will arrive and empty these bins. However, these bins will only be effective if people throw garbage into the bins and not outside.

The civic authorities said these smart bins will be made available in the garbage vulnerable points (GVPs) and mostly in areas where the business establishments are located.

Recently, the civic body launched the Jatayu Super, a contactless powerful vacuum-operated machine, to keep the city free from litter and garbage. The pilot run was carried out in Khairatabad zone.

This vacuum-operated machine facilitates garbage collection without coming into contact with the litter and trash. It also ensures zero manual handling of garbage from the garbage strewn point to the garbage truck which will subsequently be moved to the garbage transfer stations.

The civic staff can clear the trash from various garbage vulnerable points (GVPs) and huge public gathering places in a relatively short time as Jatayu Super’s powerful suction pump can remove all kinds of garbage like waste papers, pet bottles, plastic material, plastic bags, food waste, clothes, cans etc in huge quantities in a single attempt.
