Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation to Be Split Into Three After Elected Term Ends

HYDERABAD: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), India’s largest municipal body, will be split into three independent municipal corporations after the term of its elected representatives ends on February 10, sources said.
The new civic bodies are likely to be named Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Malkajgiri. Of the 12 zones in the expanded GHMC, the Hyderabad corporation will comprise six zones — Secunderabad, Khairathabad, Golconda, Charminar, Rajendranagar and Shamshabad.
The Cyberabad corporation will include the western zones of Kukatpally, Quthbullapur and Serilingampally, while the Malkajgiri corporation will cover the eastern zones of Malkajgiri, Uppal and LB Nagar, sources said. They added that the Cyberabad corporation could also be named Serilingampally corporation.
After the GHMC council’s tenure ends, special chief secretary Jayesh Ranjan, in charge of metropolitan area and urban development within Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority limits, is likely to oversee the city’s administration as special commissioner.
Sources said the names of GHMC commissioner R.V. Karnan, a 2012-batch Indian Administrative Service officer, and G. Srijana, additional commissioner and a 2013-batch officer, are being considered to head either the Hyderabad or Cyberabad corporation. T. Vinay Krishna Reddy, a 2013-batch Indian Administrative Service officer, is set to head the Malkajgiri corporation as its commissioner.
According to sources, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority building at Tarnaka may serve as the head office of the Malkajgiri corporation, while the National Academy of Construction office in Madhapur could house the Cyberabad corporation. The existing GHMC head office at Lower Tank Bund is expected to function as the headquarters of the Hyderabad corporation.
