HYDERABAD: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has started removing stray dogs from areas around government hospitals, acting on a recent Supreme Court directive to clear such animals from public zones like schools, hospitals, sports complexes and transport hubs.

On the commissioner’s orders, the GHMC’s veterinary wing began the operation on Saturday, focusing first on major government hospital premises. A total of 277 stray dogs were caught on the first day of the drive.

Officials said that, as per the court’s guidelines, the dogs will not be released back into hospital premises after sterilisation. Instead, they will be taken to GHMC-run animal care centres for surgery, vaccination, monitoring and care.

The civic body said the programme will first cover both government and private hospitals and will later be extended to schools, colleges and transport terminals across the city.
