GHMC takes sanitation workers’ children to IIT Hyderabad

HYDERABAD: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) will organise a first-of-its-kind exposure visit for children of sanitation workers to the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad campus on January 31, 2026.
Exposure visit aims to inspire students from Classes 6–10
The programme, initiated by GHMC commissioner RV Karnan, is aimed at students from Classes 6 to 10 across GHMC circles. Officials said the visit is designed to introduce children of sanitation workers to a premier higher education institution and encourage them to pursue academic goals.
Interactive sessions, campus tour planned
The day-long visit will include interactions with IIT Hyderabad faculty and students, guided tours of academic blocks, libraries and innovation centres, and motivational sessions. Officials have been instructed to ensure smooth arrangements for transportation, food, safety and mentoring support.
For many participants, this will be their first visit to a nationally reputed institution, officials said, adding that the initiative seeks to broaden aspirations among children whose families are engaged in maintaining the city’s sanitation.
“Children’s futures matter,” says GHMC commissioner
“Our sanitation workers are the backbone of Hyderabad. Through this initiative, we want to tell their children that their future is just as important as anyone else’s,” Karnan said. “This exposure visit is a small but meaningful step to help them believe in themselves.”
The programme is being organised in collaboration with the Entrepreneurship Cell of IIT Hyderabad. GHMC officials said the initiative reflects the civic body’s focus on inclusive opportunities and educational encouragement for families of frontline workers.
