HYDERABAD: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has replaced 5.53 lakh street lights across the city with energy-efficient LED fixtures as part of its ongoing efforts to reduce energy consumption and emissions.

Street lighting in Hyderabad is being upgraded by adopting global technologies and international service standards, GHMC said in a press release issued on Friday. An exclusive action plan is also being prepared in consultation with national energy efficiency experts, it added.

The initiative was implemented in coordination with the Municipal Administration and Urban Development Department and Energy Efficiency Services Limited.

On the occasion of National Energy Conservation Week, observed from December 14 to 20, GHMC commissioner RV Karnan unveiled a comprehensive report outlining the role of energy efficiency in Hyderabad’s climate action strategy.

Addressing the gathering, Karnan said unregulated human activity had led to air, water and soil pollution, affecting wildlife, human health and sustainable development. Improving energy efficiency could address over 40% of climate change challenges, he said.

The commissioner added that GHMC had intensified public awareness initiatives on urban cleanliness, waste management and environmental protection.

Karnan also referred to the ongoing Cool Roof Pilot Project at the University of Hyderabad. The project involves applying cool roof coatings on campus buildings covering about 36,746 sq ft to reduce heat absorption, cut energy use and improve thermal comfort.

The project saves around 7,000 kWh of electricity annually, contributing to the creation of a climate-resilient and energy-efficient campus, he said.

The report was prepared by Bureau of Energy Efficiency media adviser A Chandra Sekhara Reddy, with inputs from Energy Efficiency Services Limited and Telangana.
