Impact: GHMC begins repairs on damaged 100 feet Neknampur–Alijapur road

HYDERABAD: A damaged section of the 100 Feet Neknampur–Alijapur Road near Khizra Enclave in Ward 128, Manikonda, has become a flashpoint for residents and civic activists, who are outraged over poor drainage work and official indifference. HyderabadMail reported on the community’s frustration with the deteriorating road. Now, the GHMC Narsingi Circle Engineering (Maintenance) Wing has begun repairs on the waterlogged, accident-prone stretch.
The issue gained public attention after being raised during the ‘Your Problem, Our Responsibility’ public grievance programme of The Citizens Council, a voluntary socio-political organization. Residents allege the road caved in after improper drainage work, leaving hazardous conditions that have persisted for weeks.
Speaking about the issue, Shaik Arif Mohammed, General Secretary of The Citizens Council, said the damage came from poor work and official inaction. “Authorities have remained negligent despite repeated complaints,” he said, comparing the situation to earlier road collapses in Manikonda. “This is a symptom of systemic failure. Immediate repair and accountability are needed.”
“GHMC Narsingi Circle Engineering (Maintenance) Wing for promptly initiating road repair works near Khizra Enclave on the 100 Feet Neknampur–Alijapur Road, a stagnant water, affected, and accident-prone stretch,” said Arif.
Beyond the immediate repairs, residents are demanding deeper systemic reforms. Anupama Kapoor, a concerned citizen, voiced a sentiment shared by many: “The government should penalize the contractors who are given these contracts to make roads and the office in charge who awards them.” She also pointed to a fundamental flaw in the tender process, “Till the time L1 [Lowest Bidder] is considered the main factor to qualify, we will have to face these fiascos.”
